Antecedents of Strategic Flexibility in Startup Incubators: Navigating Ecosystem Dynamics for Adaptive Needs Mapping in Indigo PnD
Abstract
This research aims to identify and analyze the antecedents of strategic flexibility within Indigo Pre-Startup & Discovery (PnD) in response to rapid startup ecosystem dynamics. The study employs a qualitative-exploratory approach, utilizing purposive sampling to gather data through in-depth interviews with management and startup founders, direct observations of strategic reviews, and comprehensive documentation analysis. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, involving data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that strategic flexibility is driven by three primary antecedents: dynamic environmental intelligence, adaptive hierarchical governance systems, and institutionalized adaptive learning cycles. These elements are operationalized through an "Adaptive Needs Mapping" process, which allows the incubator to calibrate its resource allocation and support mechanisms precisely to the evolving requirements of early-stage startups. By maintaining a hybrid governance structure, Indigo PnD effectively balances corporate stability with the agility needed to navigate frontier technology shifts. This study provides a strategic framework for corporate incubators to enhance responsiveness and sustainability within volatile digital economies.
