3. Author and Article Metadata

Certain information associated with published scholarly articles is intended to become part of the permanent scholarly record.

This may include:

  • author names;

  • affiliations;

  • ORCID iDs;

  • article titles;

  • abstracts;

  • keywords;

  • corresponding author information;

  • funding information;

  • contributor information;

  • publication dates;

  • references;

  • DOI metadata.

Once an article has been published, such scholarly metadata may be distributed to or harvested by indexing services, scholarly databases, repositories, DOI registration agencies, libraries, search engines, and other academic information systems.

This information may remain part of the scholarly record even if a user later requests deletion of their journal account.

4. Peer Review Confidentiality

BMB applies a double-blind peer review process.

Manuscripts submitted to the journal are treated as confidential documents during editorial assessment and peer review.

Editors, reviewers, and other individuals involved in the editorial process must not:

  • disclose unpublished manuscript content to unauthorized individuals;

  • use confidential manuscript information for personal advantage;

  • distribute manuscript files outside the authorized editorial process;

  • disclose reviewer or author identities where anonymity is required;

  • upload confidential manuscripts or associated files to third-party systems in ways that compromise confidentiality.

Reviewer identities will not normally be disclosed to authors under the double-blind review system unless disclosure is required by law, necessary to address serious publication misconduct, or otherwise justified under journal policy.

5. Use of Artificial Intelligence and Confidential Data

Editors and reviewers must exercise particular care when using Artificial Intelligence (AI) or generative AI tools.

Unpublished manuscripts, confidential research data, reviewer reports, author information, or other confidential submission materials must not be uploaded to public or third-party AI systems where confidentiality, intellectual property protection, data retention, or subsequent use cannot be adequately guaranteed.

AI tools must not replace independent editorial or peer-review judgment.

Further requirements are described in BMB's Screening for Plagiarism and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy.
